Leading Someone to Christ
As a Christian, we should prepare ourselves to lead people to Christ. In the Bible, after being presented with the Gospel, the people at Pentecost cried, “What shall we do?” In other words, how can we be saved? Peter replied, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38) This interaction is a clear model for leading someone to Christ. First present the gospel, then ask them to repent and be baptized. Over 3000 people were baptized that day.
While you can lead a person through the sinners prayer in situations where baptism is impossible, it is always preferable to baptize people into the body of Christ. The Great Commision calls us to go and baptize, and it is a command that the sinner’s prayer does not cover. There is still a mandate of a believer to find a place to be baptized and publicly commit themselves to a life following Christ. Below is a script to help you in situations where God may call you to baptize someone. You do not have to be a pastor or a priest. You just need to be a born again believer in Jesus Christ armed with the truth of the Gospel message. For more information listen to this message from Pastor Scott.
Script for Baptism
Do you repent of your sins and accept Jesus as your Savior?
(If yes) Repeat after me:
“Jesus, I believe You are God, You became a man and lived a perfect life,”
“You died on a cross to pay the cost for my sin, so we might receive eternal life,”
“You rose from the dead by the power of God, and You ascended to Heaven until You return to establish Your kingdom on earth.”
“Jesus, from this day on, I promise to put my trust in You.”
“I will follow You as Lord of my life, denying myself and serving You with all my heart.”
“Fill me with Your Spirit and help me to live according to Your Word.”
Now with that confession, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
(Baptize)
Welcome to the Family.
(Pray for them)
Note: If no water is near, have them pray this confession and thank Jesus at the end. Instruct them to find a Christian church for baptism.
